Who do Google's AI Overviews cite when businesses search for marketing help?

October 8, 2026 · · FIELD NOTES

Original data: the sites Google's AI answers lean on when a business owner looks for paid ads, tracking, SEO or lead generation help. The short version is that video and forums beat directories, and the slots are spread thin.

Short answer

In one October 2026 run of 117 US searches for marketing help, Google showed an AI Overview on 97 of them (83%). The 90 overviews that listed sources cited 402 different sites, a median of 7 per answer. YouTube appeared in 60% of those overviews, Reddit in 34%, LinkedIn in 19%, and agency directories such as Clutch and DesignRush in only 8%.

How was the data collected?

We track 117 searches a business owner types when hiring marketing help: paid ads management, Google and Meta ads, Amazon PPC, local service ads, conversion tracking, SEO, websites and lead response. Each search was run once as a US desktop Google search through DataForSEO's live results API, with the AI Overview expanded so every listed source was captured. A site counts as cited when its domain appears among an overview's sources, and each domain counts once per overview. The full table is a free download: ai-overview-citations-2026-10.csv (402 rows).

How often did Google show an AI Overview?

On 97 of the 117 searches. Seven overviews showed no source list, which leaves 90 overviews with sources to count. Some kinds of searches triggered an overview every single time:

Are the citation slots already taken?

No. Of the 402 cited sites, 329 appeared in only one overview. Outside a handful of platforms, Google spreads its citations across many specific pages, which means a business with one clear, current page on a narrow question is competing with dozens of different pages, not with one entrenched winner.

What should a business do with this?

  1. Write one page per real question your buyers ask, and answer it in the first paragraph. The long tail of citations rewards specific pages over broad ones.
  2. Show up where the answers are formed. Forums and video appear in a large share of overviews; a useful, honest answer in a relevant discussion or a short explainer video can be cited where a sales page is not.
  3. Keep directory profiles accurate, but do not expect them to carry AI visibility. They appeared in 8% of overviews here.
  4. Measure it. Rankings alone no longer show whether AI answers name or cite you, so track that separately for the questions that bring you customers.

What can this data not tell you?

It is one day, US desktop only, 117 searches and one data vendor. AI answers change from run to run, so treat these as shares for that day, not a ranking. It counts domains, not page quality, and it says nothing about clicks or traffic. We will rerun the same searches each quarter with the same method, so the next edition can show what changed.

Fair questions

Does Google cite agency websites in AI Overviews for marketing searches?

Yes, but rarely the same ones twice. Of the 402 sites cited across 90 overviews, 329 appeared in only one. Agency directories such as Clutch and DesignRush appeared in 8% of overviews; the rest of the citations were a long tail of individual websites, with agencies, software vendors and publishers among them.

Why does YouTube show up so often in AI Overviews?

This study measured how often, not why: YouTube appeared in 54 of 90 overviews. A likely reason is that most marketing how-to questions already have video answers for Google to draw on, but the data does not prove a cause.

Can a small business get cited in an AI Overview?

The data suggests the slots are not locked up: 82% of the cited sites appeared once. A page that answers one specific question clearly, with current and checkable facts, has a realistic chance of being one of the sources.
