What do generative engine optimization services include?
A buyer's guide to the work, the measurements, the price, and the promises that should end a sales call.
Short answer
Generative engine optimization services should establish a repeatable visibility baseline, fix technical access, improve source-worthy pages, clarify business entities, and track mentions and citations across the AI systems buyers use. Good GEO builds on SEO and reports sampled trends. It cannot guarantee that ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google will cite or recommend a business.
What problem should a GEO service solve?
The practical problem is not “make content sound more like AI.” It is whether an answer system can retrieve a page, understand the facts on it, trust the supporting evidence, and choose it as a source for a commercially relevant question.
That begins with conventional search foundations. Google says pages must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements for appearing as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its guidance also says no special AI file or schema is required. Read Google's AI features and website guidance.
This matters when reviewing an agency proposal. A vendor selling a secret markup, an “AI-only” rewrite, or an llms.txt file as the whole solution is packaging one tactic as a system. A credible engagement connects crawlability, content, evidence, entity clarity, external corroboration, and measurement.
Our local SEO and AI search service treats those as one search system rather than a replacement for SEO.
What should generative engine optimization services include?
| Workstream | What the agency should do | What you should receive |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt research | Map the questions buyers ask by intent, product, audience, and market. | A fixed prompt set with a reason for each prompt. |
| Baseline | Record answers, mentions, citations, cited URLs, and competitors by engine. | A dated export or screenshots that can be rerun. |
| Technical access | Check indexing, robots rules, rendering, canonicals, internal links, and important structured data. | An issue list with evidence, owner, and priority. |
| Content | Improve pages that answer real questions with direct language, original evidence, and attributable sources. | Named pages, briefs, edits, and a publication log. |
| Entity clarity | Make names, services, locations, people, and relationships consistent on owned properties. | A fact sheet and a list of inconsistencies fixed. |
| Authority | Identify independent sources that already shape answers and legitimate gaps in corroboration. | A source map, not a promise to manufacture mentions. |
| Measurement | Repeat the same prompt panel and connect referral traffic and conversions where available. | Engine-level trends with prompts, dates, and limitations. |
The fixed prompt set is essential. Answers can change with wording, location, model, personalization, and time. Without a stable sample, a favorable screenshot proves only that one answer appeared once.
What does the research actually support?
The paper that introduced GEO evaluated 9 methods across a benchmark of 10,000 queries and reported visibility improvements of up to 40%. The strongest group of methods added reliable citations, relevant quotations, or statistics. Those exact benchmark results appear in the GEO research paper.
That finding is useful, but its boundary matters. The researchers measured position-adjusted word count and subjective impression in generated responses. They did not prove that adding a statistic guarantees a citation, a ranking, traffic, a lead, or revenue on a live business site. The paper also states that it did not evaluate effects on search rankings.
Google describes its generative search features as rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems, using retrieval-augmented generation to find current pages from its Search index. That is why we recommend fixing eligibility and usefulness before buying platform-specific tricks. See Google's generative AI search optimization guide.
ChatGPT search can show citations and a Sources panel, but OpenAI warns that results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Its own guidance tells readers to open cited sources and check whether they support the answer. That same verification standard should apply to a GEO report. See OpenAI's ChatGPT search guide.
How should AI search visibility be measured?
Use separate measures for presence, attribution, traffic, and business outcomes. Do not collapse them into one “AI visibility score.”
- Presence: Did the engine answer the prompt, and did it name the business?
- Citation: Did it link to the business, and which exact page did it cite?
- Share of voice: Across the fixed prompt set, how often did the business appear compared with named competitors?
- Accuracy: Were the name, offer, price, location, and other material facts correct?
- Referral behavior: Did visits arrive from identifiable AI sources, and what did those visitors do?
- Commercial outcome: Did a lead or sale identify AI search as part of discovery or evaluation?
Google currently includes appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the overall Web search type in Search Console rather than exposing a clean, separate citation report. That makes independent prompt tracking useful, but it also means the prompt sample and methodology must be disclosed.
Clicks are a separate question from citations. Pew Research Center analyzed 68,879 unique Google searches from 900 US adults. Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits. The methodology and exact figures are on Pew's AI summary click study.
Those figures do not assign a value to any individual citation. They show why reports should distinguish being present in an answer from earning a visit.
What do GEO services cost?
Costs depend on whether the work is diagnostic, platform-specific, or a full search program. Compare scope before comparing monthly fees. A low price for a scan is not equivalent to implementation, and an expensive dashboard is not equivalent to technical or editorial work.
| Barlo Digital option | Published price | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Search Audit | $497 | Technical crawl, local-pack position check, AI-answer citation review, and a priced 90-day plan. |
| AI Answers | $1,997 a month | Standalone AI-answer work. |
| AI Answers add-on | $997 a month | Added to Barlo's Maps and Local or Organic Growth service. |
| Total Search | $4,497 a month | Maps and Local, Organic Growth, and AI Answers together. |
These are the current prices published on Barlo Digital's SEO and AI search page. Before hiring any provider, ask whether the quote includes research, implementation, content production, technical fixes, external-source work, tracking software, and reporting. Put exclusions in writing.
Which GEO promises are snake oil?
- Guaranteed citations or recommendations. The provider does not control the model, index, retrieval step, or generated answer.
- A proprietary score with no prompt list. A score cannot be audited when the questions, engines, geography, date, and calculation are hidden.
- One screenshot presented as sustained visibility. Require repeated observations against the same panel.
- Schema as the entire strategy. Structured data can clarify eligible page information, but Google says no special schema is required for its AI features.
- Content volume without source quality. More pages do not repair unsupported claims, weak evidence, or crawl problems.
- AI mentions treated as leads. A mention, citation, visit, inquiry, and sale are different events.
- Claims that SEO no longer matters. Google's own documentation says its generative features rely on core Search systems.
A sound contract defines controllable outputs: audits completed, issues fixed, pages improved, evidence published, prompts tracked, and reports delivered. It should not turn an external platform's decision into a guarantee.
How should you compare GEO agencies?
- Ask for the complete prompt panel and why each prompt has commercial value.
- Ask which engines, locations, accounts, and dates the baseline covers.
- Separate technical fixes, content work, entity cleanup, and independent-source work in the scope.
- Ask how the agency verifies every source and factual claim before publication.
- Require the raw observations behind any aggregate visibility score.
- Ask which deliverables you own when the engagement ends.
- Reject guarantees tied to rankings, citations, recommendations, leads, or revenue that the agency cannot control.
The best proposal should let another competent team reproduce the baseline. If the method cannot be inspected, the buyer is purchasing a story rather than a measurement system.

Fair questions
Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO changes the output being measured: mentions, citations, cited pages, and answer accuracy across generative systems. It does not remove the need for crawlability, indexing, useful content, clear entities, and reputable evidence. For Google specifically, the company says its AI features rely on core Search ranking and quality systems.
Can an agency guarantee a ChatGPT or AI Overview citation?
No. An agency can improve technical access, source quality, answer structure, evidence, and measurement. It cannot control retrieval or the final generated answer. A responsible agreement guarantees only work the provider controls, such as a documented baseline, specified fixes, published assets, and reporting on a declared schedule.
How long should GEO measurement run?
Long enough to compare repeated samples against the same prompt panel after the planned fixes are live and discoverable. There is no universal waiting period because crawling, indexing, model behavior, competition, and site authority differ. The report should show dates and sample sizes instead of turning a short observation into a fixed promise.
