Begin with a work-area assessment. Identify unstable structures, questionable walking surfaces, holes, edges, electrical hazards, and areas that should remain restricted. OSHA says holes should be covered or guarded and inadequate structural support should be marked.
Fall protection remains a required part of roofing activity. For low-slope roofs with unprotected sides and edges 6 feet or more above lower levels, OSHA requires specified fall-protection measures. For steep roofs above that threshold, OSHA lists guardrail systems with toeboards, safety-net systems, or personal fall-arrest systems.
Wet or slippery areas require appropriate footwear. NIOSH recommends slip-resistant footwear for those conditions. Its ladder guidance also calls for three points of contact and says workers should not carry materials while climbing.
