What is Amazon Ads Agent, and do you still need a PPC agency?

October 11, 2026 · 9 min read ·
Amazon has put planning, targeting, campaign changes and analysis behind a conversational interface. That makes execution faster. It does not decide which economics, catalog priorities or risks should govern the account.

What is Amazon Ads Agent?

Amazon Ads Agent is Amazon's AI-powered advertising platform and conversational assistant. It can help plan media, recommend targeting, analyze performance and suggest changes to bids and budgets. Some features can take action after advertiser review. You still need a person to set business goals, protect margins, judge catalog constraints and decide whether Amazon's recommendations fit the brand.

What did Amazon announce on September 29, 2026?

Amazon renamed its unified ad platform Amazon Ads Agent and presented it as one place for Sponsored Ads, Full-Funnel Campaigns, and Display, Video, and Audio campaigns. Advertisers can use manual campaign tools, let Amazon optimize, or combine the two approaches.

The announcement matters because the agent is not only a chat window for explanations. Amazon says it can support decisions and take action across campaign types. Its announced conversational capabilities cover media planning, AI targeting, natural-language analytics and guidance for Sponsored Products.

Availability needs a careful qualifier. Amazon's September 29 product update says the conversational experience is a closed beta for eligible self-service and managed-service advertisers. Amazon also says eligibility, capability, marketplace, language and campaign type can affect access. The broader announcement says the new conversational capabilities will roll out over the coming months. In other words, an announced feature is not proof that it is enabled in every seller's account today.

What can Amazon Ads Agent automate today or soon?

This table separates Amazon's printed product claims from our operating judgment. It does not assume capabilities Amazon has not confirmed, such as setting a seller's margin targets, resolving catalog problems or deciding how much stock should be exposed to demand.

What does Amazon's performance figure actually show?

Amazon reports that advertisers using natural language to apply campaign targeting recommendations saw more than 25% additional unique customers while lowering cost per impression by more than 10% on average. Those exact figures appear in Amazon's September 29 announcement.

That is useful product evidence, but it is not a universal benchmark. Amazon does not publish the sample size, account mix, observation period or experimental design on that page. The result concerns advertisers who applied targeting recommendations. It does not establish that every recommendation improves profit, total advertising cost of sale or contribution margin.

We would use the figures as a reason to test the tool, not as a forecast. The right comparison is a controlled change against the account's own baseline, with the same product, offer, inventory condition and measurement window wherever possible.

Which decisions should stay with a person?

Set the economic target before asking for optimization

An agent can optimize toward the goal it receives. It cannot determine the correct tradeoff between growth and profit without business inputs. Before applying recommendations, define the maximum acceptable advertising cost of sale by product or portfolio. Include product cost, Amazon fees, returns, discounts and the contribution needed to cover overhead.

Total advertising cost of sale also needs context. A launch product may tolerate a different target from an established product. A branded campaign may appear efficient while merely capturing demand created elsewhere. A person has to decide which outcome the budget is meant to buy.

Connect catalog reality to campaign choices

Advertising cannot fix a weak detail page, an unavailable variation, suppressed inventory or an offer that lost the Buy Box. Before increasing bids, check retail readiness: inventory cover, price, featured-offer status, reviews, images and variation structure. Pause or constrain advertising when the catalog cannot convert or fulfill the demand.

This is where senior-led Amazon PPC management still has a role. The work is not clicking the same controls faster. It is connecting ad decisions to margin, stock, catalog health and the wider commercial plan.

Review the recommendation, not just the interface

Amazon's separate launch page says advertisers remain in control while exploring recommendations and taking action. Treat that control as a required review step. Record the proposed change, the reason for it, the affected campaigns, the expected result and a rollback condition before applying it.

How should you test Amazon Ads Agent safely?

  1. Confirm access. Check whether the conversational experience appears in the account and which campaign types it supports. Closed-beta access is not uniform.
  2. Choose one narrow job. Start with analysis or a recommendation review, not broad account changes.
  3. State the constraint. Give the tool the relevant goal, budget boundary, product set and time window. Do not assume it knows the business's margin or inventory priorities.
  4. Save the before state. Export settings and record the baseline metrics before applying anything.
  5. Inspect the proposed action. Check targeting, bids, budgets, placements and affected products. Look for changes that move spend toward low-margin or constrained inventory.
  6. Test a limited scope. Apply the change to a controlled campaign or portfolio and define the evaluation window in advance.
  7. Judge business results. Review sales, spend, advertising cost of sale, total advertising cost of sale and contribution margin. Do not stop at impressions or clicks.
  8. Keep or reverse. Expand only after the result survives the planned review period and catalog conditions remain comparable.

Do you still need an Amazon PPC agency?

You may not need an agency for every mechanical task. Amazon Ads Agent can reduce time spent finding reports, building targeting recommendations and navigating campaign settings. A brand with simple economics, clean catalog operations and an experienced internal owner may use it directly.

You still need accountable human management when decisions cross systems. Common examples include setting profit-aware targets, coordinating ads with inventory and promotions, separating branded capture from incremental demand, challenging an attractive but incomplete metric and deciding when not to spend.

The practical question is not whether AI replaces an agency. Ask who owns the decision model. If someone inside the business can define constraints, review changes and connect advertising to profit, the agent can accelerate that person. If no one owns those decisions, automation can make an unclear strategy move faster.

Fair questions

Is Amazon Ads Agent available to every advertiser?

No. Amazon's September 29 product update describes the conversational experience as a closed beta for eligible self-service and managed-service advertisers. Access can vary by marketplace, language, capability and campaign type. Check the account itself or ask the Amazon Ads account team before planning a workflow around a specific feature.

Can Amazon Ads Agent change bids and budgets?

Amazon says the sponsored-ads guidance can recommend targeting, bids and budgets, then let an advertiser apply those recommendations in one click. That does not mean every account has the feature or that every recommendation should be accepted. Review margin, inventory and campaign scope before applying a change.

Does Amazon Ads Agent make an agency unnecessary?

It can remove some manual work, but it does not remove the need for commercial judgment. Someone still has to set targets, connect campaigns to catalog and inventory conditions, assess incrementality and decide when a recommendation conflicts with profit. The right owner may be an internal specialist or an external senior team.
